What is a PAPI or Precision Approach Path Indicator?

The Precision Approach Path Indicator or PAPI is a critical component of airfield ground lighting that helps pilots maintain the correct glide slope during approach and landing. The PAPI consists of a series of lights arranged in a specific configuration typically located alongside the runway. These lights emit either white or red depending on the pilot’s position in relation to the ideal glide path.

When an aircraft is above the desired glide path, the pilot sees more red lights than white. Conversely, if the aircraft is below the glide path, the pilot sees more white lights than red. When the pilot maintains the correct glide path, an equal number of red and white lights are visible.

By providing this visual indication of the aircraft’s position relative to the optimal glide slope, the PAPI assists pilots in making precise altitude adjustments during the approach and landing phases. This helps ensure a safe descent profile and aids in achieving a smooth touchdown within the designated touchdown zone of the runway. In essence, the PAPI enhances flight safety by providing reliable guidance for pilots during critical phases of flight.
