Many modern airport lighting systems use LED technology because it can reduce energy consumption, extend maintenance intervals and provide stable visual performance. However, halogen fixtures may still be present in older installations, legacy circuits or specific retrofit environments.
For a growing number of airports, though, this is no longer simply a technology upgrade — it is becoming an unavoidable one. Two pressures are driving the timeline:
Regulatory and carbon-zero commitments.
Many national and regional authorities have introduced airport decarbonization targets and net-zero roadmaps that directly touch ground infrastructure, not just aircraft operations. Airfield lighting, running for hours every night across dozens or hundreds of circuits, is a visible and measurable share of an airport’s electricity consumption. As reporting requirements and emissions targets tighten, halogen-based lighting increasingly becomes a line item that is difficult to justify in an airport’s sustainability disclosure.
Rising energy costs.
Independent of regulation, the economics have shifted. Halogen lamps consume significantly more power per fixture and require far more frequent replacement than LEDs, whose typical service life can be an order of magnitude longer. For airports operating on tight capital and maintenance budgets, the combination of volatile energy prices and constant relamping costs is turning LED conversion from a “nice to have” into a near-term financial necessity, often with a payback period short enough to justify capital investment even without incentives.
Changing from halogen to LED is not just a lamp replacement, though. Engineers must consider photometric compliance, CCR compatibility, monitoring behavior, thermal performance and environmental conditions.
In cold climates, LED fixtures may require heating or anti-ice solutions because LEDs typically produce less forward heat than halogen lamps. For special military or night-vision operations, spectral compatibility may also need to be assessed.
