Why Do Runway Lights Change Color During Landing?

Postend on Sep 9, 2026
This color coding supports situational awareness during landing, rollout and rejected take-off. For example, runway centerline lights may transition from white to alternating red and white, and then to red, as the remaining runway distance decreases.

The exact color pattern depends on the runway configuration and the applicable aviation standard, such as ICAO, FAA, EASA or national authority requirements. For this reason, runway lighting design should always be validated against the airport certification basis and the competent authority.
