Why Are Airfield Lights Connected in Series Circuits?

Postend on Sep 9, 2026

Airfield lighting circuits are commonly designed as constant-current series circuits. This approach helps maintain consistent current through all lights in the circuit, even across long runway or taxiway cable runs.

In a series circuit, the Constant Current Regulator adjusts its output to maintain the selected current level. This current level determines the brightness step required for the operating condition, such as day, night or low visibility.

This is one reason CCRs are central to AGL power architecture. They allow airport operators to control lighting intensity while maintaining stable electrical performance across the field circuit.
