Elevated and inset runway lights are designed for different installation positions and mechanical conditions. Elevated lights are installed above the surface, typically on frangible couplings or supports, so they can break away if struck by an aircraft.
Inset lights are installed into the pavement, with the light-emitting surface close to runway or taxiway level. They are used where aircraft wheels may pass over or near the fixture, such as runway centerlines, touchdown zones, taxiway centerlines and stop bars.
Inset lights must withstand demanding mechanical, environmental and maintenance conditions. Their installation requires suitable bases, sealing, alignment and compliance with the applicable airport lighting standard.
