What Happens If a Runway Light Fails?

Postend on Sep 9, 2026

A single runway light failure does not automatically make a runway unusable. The operational impact depends on the type of light, its location, the number of failed lights, whether failures are adjacent, and the category of operation supported by the runway.

Modern AGL systems help maintenance teams detect and locate failures. Constant Current Regulators can provide circuit-level information, while Individual Lamp Control and Monitoring Systems can support more detailed monitoring of individual fixtures or groups of lights.

The acceptable level of degradation is not universal. It depends on the applicable ICAO, FAA, EASA or national authority requirements, as well as the airport’s operational procedures. For safety-critical lighting systems, maintenance and reporting processes must be clearly defined.
